Windmill on open grassland in the Nebraska Sandhills
Prairie to Table™

Agriculture built for independence, not subsidy checks.

Sandhills Sovereign Farms is proving a different economic model in the Nebraska Sandhills: land-first stewardship, direct access to retail markets, and a verifiable record of every step in between.

How It Works

A model built on the ground, not on a subsidy check.

Four commitments, in order, that make subsidy independence possible.

01

Land-first stewardship

Regenerative practices that build soil and forage health for the long run, managed as a working asset rather than a program checklist.

02

Direct market access

Selling into retail and direct channels instead of the commodity system, so the return on the work stays closer to the producer.

03

Verified, not just claimed

Every material step recorded through Prairie Ledger, so buyers and consumers can check the journey themselves rather than take a label on faith.

04

Reinvested regionally

Returns stay in the Sandhills: regional labor, regional suppliers, and land stewardship that benefits the wider community, not just one operation.

About

Prove it first. Then invite others to follow.

Sandhills Sovereign Farms began as an idea before it became a working operation: help Sandhills and central plains producers find a real path off government subsidy dependence and out from under the commodity packer system.

The response from much of the region was polite skepticism: it can't be done. Rather than keep arguing the point, the founder decided to prove it instead.

Sandhills Sovereign Farms is a working proof of concept, not a theory. What gets proven on our own ground becomes a path other producers in the region can follow, on their own ground, at their own pace, and Prairie Ledger exists to make every step of that path checkable by anyone, not just by us.

Founder

Sandhills Sovereign Farms was founded by Brian J. Behrens, a descendant of 1870s Nebraska homesteaders. Brian currently serves as Secretary of the Board of the Nebraska Sustainable Agriculture Society, a statewide, farmer-led nonprofit focused on agriculture and food systems that build healthy land, people, communities, and quality of life. That work keeps him directly connected to the practitioners, researchers, and beginning farmers this model is ultimately meant to serve.

How we prove it: Prairie Ledger

Prairie Ledger is a Sandhills Sovereign Farms company: a tamper-evident, hash-chained record of how food actually moves from field to shelf, anchored to a public blockchain so anyone, not just us, can verify it. The MVP is live in production today, built and developed entirely in-house.

FAQ

Common questions.

What does subsidy independence mean for Sandhills Sovereign Farms?

It means building a business around what land and direct markets actually pay, rather than around what a government program pays. Sandhills Sovereign Farms is structured to be economically viable on its own terms, without relying on federal commodity subsidy programs to make the numbers work.

How is Sandhills Sovereign Farms different from a typical Sandhills ranch or farm?

The operation is built land-first around regenerative practices and direct retail market access rather than commodity sale, and every step of the process is recorded through Prairie Ledger so buyers and consumers can verify it independently instead of taking a label at face value.

What is Prairie Ledger and how does it connect to Sandhills Sovereign Farms?

Prairie Ledger is a Sandhills Sovereign Farms company: a tamper-evident, hash-chained record of how food moves from field to shelf, anchored to a public blockchain so anyone can verify it. It was built in-house, on our own ground, to close the gap between what a label claims and what can actually be checked.

Can other producers work with or learn from Sandhills Sovereign Farms?

Yes. Sandhills Sovereign Farms exists to prove the model first and then open a path for other Sandhills and central plains producers to follow, at their own pace and on their own ground. Reach out through the contact form to start that conversation.
